“Ehara toa i te toa takitahi,
engari he toa takitini”
My strength is not that of a single person, but the strength of many

We are Awhi Tu Collective, a group of people who originally got together to find, create and enjoy a sense of community and social connection at a time when division seemed to be playing out all around us.
In the process of building the community we wish to live in, we have each discovered that in order to move forward there is so much that needs to be unlearned. When we let go of the familiar that is holding us back, there is a world of opportunity waiting.
Our vision is that people within our community are fully aware of their ancient and indefeasible right of self determination, absolute sovereignty and the responsibilities that come with that.
Such a vision requires conducting our affairs within the kawa of Tika, Pono and Aroha, doing what is right while acting in honour, with love and empathy. We are also committed to upholding the Tikanga and Mana of our Proclaimed Hapu whose aroha and support have assisted us on this journey.
Encouraging the community to engage with each other in the light of Our Creator/Universal Life Source and in Honour of our tupuna (ancestors) is key to our future
Our journey is one of facilitation, teaching and learning. Those who walk it know there is a better path to a place where, ultimately, all people are capable of enacting their self-determination and living happy, healthy, well balanced and well-connected lives.
Our Story
Awhi Tu Collective was born during a lockdown when a couple of friends expressed a desire to connect with others looking to build a safe, accepting community.
That conversation was shared to people with similar concerns and soon that small group had grown to a collection of like-minded souls gathering for monthly pot luck dinners, movie nights and information sharing wānanga.
Soon enough during these gatherings talk turned to the state of our nation and, as a result of those discussions, our group turned their hand to building the community we wished to live in.
Part of building our community included learning about He wakaputanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Suffice to say that was a learning curve. The information presented was confronting and thought provoking. One of the great things about our Collective is that questions, debate and other opinions that raise more questions and debate are acceptable in our conversations.

Our founding documents – He wakaputanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
Let’s take a look at the founding documents of Nu Tireni – He wakaputanga o te Rangatira o Nu Tireni 1835, the Proclamation of Sovereign State, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840.
What is their significance both within Te Ika me Te Waka ā Maui (The North and South Island of New Zealand Aotearoa) and internationally? What is their relevance today?

Life is a learning journey and navigating that extraordinary path is all about the choices one makes. A truly fulfilling journey demands creativity, curiosity, and courage and sometimes, a helping hand.
